This dive site does have an element of high drama at times

Thailand has some excellent dive sites where the currents are generally calm with few waves to worry about and are quite predictable making Thailand a great place to learn to dive.

However, there are certain dive sites in the country that defy this law of tranquillity: dive sites such as Shark Fin Reef (in the Similans), The Dome (on Koh Tachai), Hin Muang and this one on the southern point of Racha Noi.

Several Liveaboard boats stop here, it is also possible to dive on the day boats out of Phuket too.

South Tip is an entirely different animal to most other dive sites in the country. One minute it can be flat with calm seas, and then the tide will change, the wind picks, waves grow and its hold on to your mask time.

Other sites are:

Make no mistake this is a special dive site, there are huge boulders making some excellent swim-throughs and when combined with strong currents, it attracts interest from some very large pelagic fish that love to hunt in the currents.

As the currents run down both sides, of the island from the north, they collide at the southern tip smashing into the huge boulders; at spring tides it can cause a downward current, which can force the diver down, making much fun -keep your eye on your gauges here.

This is a big attraction for larger fish as they come here come to feed. Manta Rays and Whalesharks love it during plankton blooms; diving down then launching themselves towards the surface, guzzling down huge amounts of plankton.

Large Barracuda, Giant and Yellow Fin Trevallies, Dogtooth Tunas and other Jacks whizz through the water like lightning flashes, using the strong currents to help propel them towards their prey.

Try hovering over the tops of the boulders, if possible, and you will have a bird’s eye view as these fish terrorize the smaller ones -they are top of their food chain and really are in control.

The visibility can change quickly, though usually very good, forty metres is not uncommon, but it can drop down top ten meters depending on the conditions.

This is such a fantastic dive site you can also find Black Tip Reef Sharks, Eagle Rays have been known to turn up, Schools of Barracudas, stunning Angelfish, schooling Bannerfish as well as Wrasses and Parrotfish.
